As one of the country's prominent EV charging station providers, Rubicon Group has witnessed a substantial surge in usage across its network, catalyzing the nation's transition towards sustainable transportation solutions.
Expanding Charging Infrastructure
With a comprehensive network comprising DC fast charging stations ranging from 25kW to 150kW, Rubicon Group has strategically positioned its charging stations along major routes, shopping centers, and accommodation hubs. By the end of 2023, Rubicon boasted 68 public charging stations with a combined installed capacity exceeding 2,500kW, catering to the growing demand for EV charging services.
Accelerated Adoption and Usage
The surge in EV charging sessions underscores South Africa's burgeoning appetite for electric mobility. In 2023 alone, Rubicon recorded over 4,800 charging sessions across its public and dealership stations, reflecting a remarkable uptick in EV utilization. Quarterly transaction volumes and charging hours witnessed exponential growth, contributing to a substantial increase in Rubicon's revenue from public charging electricity sales.
Meeting Growing Demand
As South Africa experiences a paradigm shift towards electric mobility, Rubicon anticipates a surge in EV demand fueled by the availability of more affordable models. To accommodate this burgeoning demand, Rubicon plans to expand its charging network to 250 stations by the end of 2024. Moreover, collaborations with major vehicle manufacturers to integrate backup storage capacities into charging infrastructure will enhance accessibility and reliability, particularly during power outages.

Despite the remarkable progress, challenges such as potential charging station shortages loom on the horizon.
