The South African used car market is flourishing, recording a 14% month-on-month increase in July with 31,707 sales and a transactional value close to R13 billion.
Ford Ranger Leads the Market
Data from AutoTrader shows the Ford Ranger leading with 1,903 sales, followed by the Toyota Hilux at 1,540.
Tight Competition for Third and Fourth Spots
The VW Polo and Polo Vivo closely contested for third and fourth places, with the Polo selling 1,384 units against the Polo Vivo’s 1,179.
Remaining Top Performers
The Toyota Fortuner was fifth with 756 sales, while the Mercedes-Benz C-Class took sixth with 565 units sold, just ahead of the Suzuki Swift at 513.
The Nissan NP200 narrowly beat the BMW 3 Series for eighth place, selling 497 units compared to 471 for the sedan.
Completing the top ten is the Isuzu D-Max, which saw a 30% rise in sales to 436 units, improving its rank by four spots from June.
Market Insights
In July, the average used car price increased 0.4% to R409,238, with an average age of five years and mileage of 75,227 km.
All brands gained market share except for Kia, which fell by 13%.
According to AutoTrader CEO George Mienie, the rise in used car sales is linked to a recovery in the new car market.
“New car sales growth is good for the used car sector,” Mienie stated, emphasizing it reflects better consumer financial conditions and boosts future used car sales.
